- Website marketing Walkthrough
-
Submitting your web site to search engines is the most important thing you can do for your web site. Search engines handle 95 percent of the Internet traffic. We will give you the basics on making your web site search engine ready.
Unfortunately, there is no magic formula, there is no guarantees of top 10 placement when submitting to search engines. I'm quite sure that at some time you have been bombarded with advertisements claiming to guarantee top 10 positions and submissions to thousands of search engines across the country with instantaneous traffic at the click of a mouse! This is impossible and completely untrue. Good placement on search engines takes work and good preparation. Below, we will help you make your web site search engine ready. Please follow the instructions carefully. [Handzon also provide marketing services, call for details (408)-786-5615 (California, Pacific) .)
- Preparing your web site
-
One of the very first steps is good preparation of the content for your web site. We cannot stress enough how important it is to have your web site completed. We suggest reviewing all content prior to sending your web site to search engines. Be sure to use spell check! Be sure your grammar is good and your paragraphs are easy to read. [This may seem like an obvious step, you'd be surprised how many people miss this].
Be sure that all the links within your web site are correct and functioning properly. Be sure to have consistent navigation from page to page and that all information is easy to get to.
Create a site map page. This page lists all of the pages within your site and any information you would like to visitors to see. Make this as part of your web site's site map.
Try to have consistent text with consistent font sizes [we suggest no larger than a font size of 10]. We strongly suggest no more than 2-3 different colors of text, it begins to look unprofessional with too many colors. It would be best to use one consistent color.
Be sure to create the right structure when building your site map. [If you need to recreate and rename pages within your site map, we suggest doing so]. Name the pages on your web site what they are supposed to be.
As an example of this; we will use a footwear company with the fictitious name 'Rogers footwear' selling shoes:, the pages will be as follows: 'Rogers footwear' [homepage], followed by these pages below: 'our products' down to 'footwear' down to 'men's footwear' and below this, men's sneakers, men's dress shoes, men's casual shoes etc. Please see the illustration. [Notice how these pages have been well categorized for easy navigation by your customers]. Products would be your main page below the homepage, footwear would be the category below products, and the remaining sections will be within the category of footwear. Name these pages and keep in mind that every opportunity to list a keyword within a web site is important. This includes the names of all pages. Another example of this: instead of 'about us', we suggest 'about Rogers footwear' obviously Rogers footwear is fictional and is used only for this example, we would suggest replacing your company name and include a keyword about that name, in this case, you will notice the name of the Company 'Rogers' and a keyword 'footwear'.
Remember, every opportunity counts to place a keyword within the content of your web site.
Now that these pages have been created, it would be important to review the content for each one of these pages. It is extremely beneficial to have at least 300 to 400 words per page containing important keywords describing the pages' content. If as an example, you have three paragraphs about Rogers footwear, it would be important to place important keywords within these three paragraphs with one instance per paragraph. In other words, the keyword 'footwear' should show up in all three paragraphs.
- Your products
-
Another wonderful opportunity would be naming your products correctly. An example of this; Rogers footwear is selling a men's jogger 'elite 2000'. This jogger is a running shoe. Instead of listing the product as 'elite 2000' it would be more beneficial to list this product as 'elite 2000 running shoes'. It would also be important to list keywords within the description of this particular product. Notice the addition of 'running shoes'. Remember, every opportunity to place a keyword within the site.
- Your images
-
When uploading your images to be placed onto pages, if we had an image of the 'elite 2000', it would be beneficial to name this image correctly. Instead of 'elite2000.jpg', try naming it 'elite_2000_running_shoe.jpg. Be sure to notice the UNDERSCORE '_'. Try doing this for all images.
- Important: Choosing the right keywords
-
When preparing your web site, this would be incredibly important. Consider this: knowing what your customers' web site visitors are searching for and how popular a search term is could be the difference between success and failure. There are ways of determining which keywords work for your business/web site.
- Too many keywords
-
Before giving additional information on how to find the correct keywords for your business, it would be important to advise you that there should be no more than five keywords for an entire web page. A web site scoring high relevancy with 4-5 keywords during a search for "men's shoes" will show up higher than a web site with 10-15 keywords. Here's an example of this, someone is searching on AltaVista [a popular search engine] for "men's shoes", and they type in the words "men's shoes". The search engine gathers the information from the Web sites collected and begins outputting results.
One web page has the following keywords: "shoes, men's shoes, women's shoes, footwear".
Another web page has the following keywords: "shoes, men's shoes, women's shoes, footwear, sneakers, children's shoes, jogging sneakers, sweatshirts, men's sports apparel, women's sports apparel, sporting goods, etc.."
When AltaVista returns these results, which do you believe would be more relevant for the search of the "men's shoes" keyword? As you have guessed, the first would be more relevant provided that the keywords listed within their web site also contains "men's shoes".
We strongly suggest no more than 4-5 keywords used per page. Try to stay away from more generic terms, instead of "shoes" try specifying what type of shoe i.e. "men's shoes".
- Which keywords are most used?
-
A fantastic tool on the Internet for determining which keywords are most searched is listed below as a link. Simply type in a keyword that you believe your customers would search, the results will tell you how many times it has been searched for the previous month on Overture. Here is this link:
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
During the creation of this marketing tutorial, these are the results for the general term "shoes". 376,652 people have searched this term for the month of January. Below these results are other terms within the same category as "shoes". some of these terms may be more targeted than the generic "shoes". A good alternative might be "men's athletic shoes". For this particular search term at the time of this tutorial, men's athletic shoes received 19,000 searches. Granted, this is not 376,652, but this would give us more targeted customers. Choose your first five keywords based on the most targeted search terms. Once this is done, move on to the next paragraph.
- Inserting keywords on to pages
-
Now that you have determined which five keywords will be placed within the web pages, it is now time to insert these keywords "correctly" into the pages of your web site. Begin with the homepage of the web site, go to the "Live Edit", click on "page properties" at the top of the menu. You will notice the following:
Listed most important first
Marketing title: this is the title bar information at the top of the browser. This is extremely important for search engines [especially google] to gather information about a particular page. You often find the title bar being part of the returned results on many search engines. Having keywords within this title bar is essential. We would suggest no more than five. Be sure to make your sentence readable. An example of a good marketing title using our fictitious "Rogers footwear" web site, the title would read; Rogers footwear, providing men's shoes, women's shoes, athletic shoes, dress shoes and children's shoes.
Marketing keywords: we will list our five keywords as follows: men's shoes, women's shoes, athletic shoes, dress shoes, children's shoes
Marketing description: your marketing description should match your marketing title above. You may want to try variances in your description, try not to be too lengthy.
It would be important to do this for all the main pages within your web site. Follow the same steps before submitting your web site to the search engines.
- Important: Reciprocal links
-
Reciprocal links (websites linking to you and you back to them) are a major ranking variable for many of the major search engines. (i.e. Alta Vista and Google (HUGE) weight reciprocal links at an importance level of approximately 80% and 90%, respectively) Search engines determine the link popularity of your web site by the number of reciprocal links to your web site. The more links pointing to your web site the higher your ranking. Additionally, reciprocal links (to your web site from another related web site) can generate significant referral traffic. Many web sites receive more traffic from reciprocal links than they do from search engines.
So the lesson here is, LINK to other websites, request linking back to your website...
- Inserting "alt" tags on images
-
When an image is inserted onto a page, there is an alternative name that can be placed for these images. If this is done correctly, when a user moves their cursor over a particular image that contains an alternative name, you will notice the alternative text pops up. Many search engines also take into consideration "alt" tags. To get to these alternative tags on any image, click on the image, you will see a toolbar pop-up. Click on the "Layer Properties" icon. You will notice the " ALT Tag" input box. Now let's say there is an image that shows up on every page of your web site because you have made this a master object. Let us say this was your logo! This would be perfect for placing keywords about your business. So, as an example using our fictitious "Rogers footwear" web site, we would click on the logo and follow the steps above. We would then type "Rogers footwear, men's, women's and children's shoes." You will notice the variance on the keywords. Instead of "men's shoes, women's shoes etc." we are putting a different spin on the keywords. Remember, every opportunity we have to place a keyword within the site should be taken.
There are many other marketing tips available online. We would encourage you to research, you would be surprised the amount of information you can gather within a few minutes.
Now that we have the basic preparation done for search engines, we can begin submitting our web site to search engines.
- Preparing a 25 Word or less description about your web site
-
Create a 25 Word description and be sure to insert three to four keywords that you would like to be found for. We would also suggest not using any sales jargon such as "the coolest site on the Internet", "the cheapest prices" and others. Be completely direct about what you do and the services you provide. You will need this 25 word description during your submission to the search engines below.
- The important search engines to submit to.
